In the period of 450 crore years of its existence, there have been five major incidents of mass extinction on the earth. The last extinction occurred about 66 million years ago when the giant dinosaurs became extinct but many vertebrates, including mammals, survived. Today, after 66 million years, the earth is once again witnessing the biggest crisis of its existence and scientists are trying to estimate how far the sixth mass extinction could be.
